Doodle 4 Google $30,000 Scholarship Competition

Before there was an airplane, there were doodles of cool flying machines. And before there was a submarine, there were doodles of magical underwater sea explorers.  Since the beginning of time, ideas big and small, practical and playful, have started out as doodles.  And Google is ready for more!

One talented young artist will see his or her artwork on the Google homepage and receive a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 Google for Education technology grant for his or her school.

This year, Google is asking students to create their doodles based on the theme “If I Could Invent One Thing to Make the World a Better Place…” To enter the competition simply download the application form, print it, doodle your version of the Google logo based off this year’s theme and submit online or by mail.

Closing date for entries is Thursday, March 20th.

Lower East Side People’s Federal Credit Union is NOW Accepting Scholarship Applications

LES PEOPLE’S FCU is now accepting scholarship applications:

In an effort to help further the education of local high-school seniors, LES People’s FCU is offering two types of scholarships that students can benefit from:

 The statewide credit union scholarship program.- provides credit union members with $500 or $1,000 scholarships. Students/applicants will be competing against other credit union members from across the state. Last year, this program awarded $24,500 in scholarships to 37 students across New York.

 The Mary Spink college scholarship program.- provides local students/applicants two $500 scholarships. Students/applicants do not need to be members of the credit union.

Students can take advantage of this opportunity by completing three simple steps:

1. Stop in at any LES People’s FCU branch to request a scholarship application form, or visit LES People’s FCU website to download an electronic application. Members of LES People’s FCU only need to apply for the state credit union scholarship program and their applications will be considered for the Mary Spink scholarship automatically. To become a member visit us or request a membership packet at our branch.

2. Complete the application form and required essay and obtain the required transcripts, along with the signature of a parent or guardian.

3. Return the completed application and supportive materials to LES People’s FCU no later than January 31, 2014.

There is no fee for submitting an application, but applicants MUST be:

• college-bound high school seniors at the time of application; and
• attending either a two- or four-year accredited educational institution for the first time in the fall of 2014.

In early spring, applications will be judged against other submissions statewide. Winners will be announced in April.

From Failure to Promise Scholarship Essay Contest

In 2010, Dr. C. Moorer published his ground breaking work, “From Failure to Promise: An Uncommon Path to Professoriate”. The author has told his story to inspire and motivate youth to reach great promise and their fullest potential.  Dr. C. Moorer invites high school seniors, undergraduate, and graduate-level students with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA to write an original essay.  The winning essay will receive a cash prize of $1500 and will be published on the “From Failure to Promise” website.

Apply for the BRAG 2013 Scholarship Program

More than two decades ago the BRAG Scholarship Fund was founded as a means of providing needed financial assistance to students of color. The BRAG Board of Directors is proud to say they have stayed the course. They understand leadership and good citizenship comes with education. To that end, BRAG is firmly committed to their continued support of students who may have an interest in pursuing a career in retail and related industries.

The BRAG Scholarship is based on scholastic achievement, leadership, community service and need. The awards are to be used for tuition, books and/or supplies and will be disbursed in January of the school calendar year for college students and the following fall semester for High School students.  The money must be used within a one-school-year period. All monies not used within the designated period will revert back to the BRAG Scholarship Fund.  All scholarship funds are allocated directly to the University, not to the student.

Application:
An essay of 500 words on: “Brick and Mortar vs. Online Retailers”…friends or foe? How have online retailers changed the business in the last decade? must be submitted with your application.

Here is a list of the additional BRAG scholarship criteria:
•High School Students must have minimum Grade Point Average of 85
•College Students must be full-time undergraduates (12 hours or more)
•College students are required to have a cumulative GPA of 3.0
•All applicants must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident
• Must provide 2 Letters of Recommendation: (School, employment, and/or personal)
•Must provide an official copy of transcript

Students must submit their application completely filled out with all the information requested. If the requested information is incomplete; the application will not be considered.

The deadline for receipt of your Application/Essay is June 30th, 2013 for scholarships awarded in October.

Scholarships will be awarded at BRAG’s Annual Scholarship and Awards Dinner Gala in New York. The Awards Gala will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2013. It is mandatory for selected students to attend the BRAG Annual Scholarship and Awards Dinner Gala to receive their Scholarship Award.

The 2013 Nation Student Writing Contest

Eight years ago, The Nation launched an annual Student Writing Contest to identify, support and reward some of the numerous smart, progressive student journalists writing, reporting and blogging today.

This year, they’re looking for original, thoughtful, provocative student voices to answer this question: It’s clear that the political system in the US isn’t working for many. If you had to pick one root cause underlying our broken politics, what would it be and why?

Essays should not exceed 800 words and should be original, unpublished work that demonstrates fresh, clear thinking and superior quality of expression and craftsmanship. They’ll select ten finalists and two winners total—six from college students, six from high schoolers. Each winner will be awarded a $1,000 cash prize and a lifetime Nation subscription. The five finalists will be awarded $200 each and subscriptions. The winning essays will be published in The Nation magazine and featured atthenation.com. The ten finalists will be featured at thenation.com.

Entries will be accepted through Saturday, June 30, 2013. Winners will be announced by Monday, September 9.

The contest is open to all matriculating high school students and undergraduates at US schools, colleges and universities as well as those receiving either high school or college degrees in 2013. Submissions must be original, unpublished work (the writing can have been published in a student publication). Each entrant is limited to one submission. Past and present Nation interns are ineligible.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for a scholarship, an applicant must be a US Citizen, 25 years or younger, with at least a 2.0 GPA, who also falls under one of the following categories:

1. High School Senior
2. Student who has received their GED diploma
3. Undergraduate college student pursuing his/her first undergraduate degree
4. Vocational school student

The application must be completed by the published deadline date- May 31, 2013 (11:59PM EST).

Once you start your application, you may pause and continue at a later time, but you will not be allowed to continue past the deadline date. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed for admission, so make sure all questions are answered, and all required documents are included in your final submission.

The BURGER KING^® Scholars Program has awarded more than $15.4 million to high school seniors and employees across the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico since the program’s inception in 2000.

New York State PHADA Offers $1,000 Scholarship

On behalf of PHADA the Public Housing Authority Directors Association and NYSPHADA the New York State branch of the Directors Association, a $1,000 scholarship for high school seniors living in public or assisted housing at a NYSPHADA member agency will be awarded.

Eligibility Requirements

Scholarship applicants must:

• Be an authorized NYCHA resident or Section 8 recipient
• Be a high school senior preparing to enter higher level learning (defined as a 2-4 year college, trade school or formal certification program)
• Have a minimum B grade point average
• Submit the required essays
• Submit the required recommendations
• Submit an original high school transcript

Jackie Robinson Foundation 2012-2013 Scholarship

The Jackie Robinson Foundation announces the launch of the 2012-2013 Scholarship Application Process for graduating minority high school seniors. The Foundation selects highly motivated students with financial need to receive $24,000 over four years to attend a four-year accredited college or university.

The program is accompanied by a host of services, including all-expense paid annual leadership conferences, internship placement and many networking opportunities.  Selected “JRF Scholars” receive a comprehensive set of tools to ensure their success through college and beyond.

The application deadline is February 15, 2013.  Currently, there are 169 JRF Scholars attending 100 different colleges and universities in 35 states and the District of Columbia during this 2012-2013 academic year.  Close to 1400 JRF Scholars have been selected since the first awards were made in 1973.
