NIH/National Cancer Institute (NCI): Accepting applications for the Health Communications Internship Program (HCIP)

The National Cancer Institute (NCI), the largest of the 27 institutes and centers comprising the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is the Federal Government’s principal agency for cancer research and training.  The NCI coordinates the National Cancer Program, which conducts and supports research, training, health information dissemination, and other programs with respect to the cause, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of cancer, rehabilitation from cancer, and the continuing care of cancer patients and the families of cancer patients.

The HCIP gives highly qualified graduate students and recent graduate degree recipients the opportunity to participate in vital health and science communications projects in one of the many offices that make up the NCI.  Interns will select an area of emphasis: health communications or science writing.  Six-month and one-year internship terms are offered.

The NIH main campus is located in Bethesda, Maryland.  HCIP interns are placed in offices located in Bethesda or Rockville, Maryland.  Both locations are accessible via public transportation.

Applicants must meet the following qualifications to be considered eligible for the HCIP:

• US Citizen or US permanent resident (Alien Registration number is required for US permanent residents).
• Currently enrolled in, or a recent graduate of, graduate school. If a recent graduate, graduate degree must have been awarded no more than two years prior to application deadline.
• Undergraduate GPA of 2.75 (minimum) for applicants who have not yet received a Master’s degree.
• Some science background and experience and/or education.

HCIP interns work full-time (40-hours per week) from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, with a 30-minute lunch break. Changes in schedule must be approved by the intern’s supervisor.

HCIP interns are paid a monthly training stipend through a Cancer Research Training Award (CRTA). The amount of your monthly stipend will be based on your undergraduate GPA, your highest earned degree, and your relevant post-degree experience. You will earn exactly 1/12 of your annual stipend rate per month.

The National Academy of Social Insurance is Accepting Applications for PAID Internships

The National Academy of Social Insurance is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization made up of the nation’s leading experts on social insurance. Its mission is to advance solutions to challenges facing the nation by increasing public understanding of how social insurance contributes to economic security.

The National Academy of Social Insurance is accepting applications for its paid internships for students studying for or interested in careers in social insurance policy.  The internship programs cover a wide array of policy areas including Health and Income Security Policy (Washington Internship), Aging and Long-term Care Policy (Somers Internship), Disability Policy (Eileen Sweeney Internship), and Non-profit Management (Nathan J. Stark Internship).

The programs consist of a 12-week summer semester internship that usually spans May to August, depending on the student’s college schedule. Students receive a $3,500 honorarium for their internship experience and academic credit may be arranged through the intern’s college or university.

International Students with valid student visas are encouraged to apply and can be placed with non-governmental organizations, if placement projects match their skills and interests. Deadline to Apply: March 1, 2014.

The Washington Center Offers PAID Federal Diversity Internships

The Washington Center has internships available during the summer 2014 semester via the Federal Diversity Internship Initiative – and these internships will go fast!Specifically, positions are available with the United States’ Veterans Administration (VA), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), National Archives and Records Administration (NARA),Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and U.S. Department of Treasury. Students with Business/Human Resources, Communication, Computer & Information Technology, Engineering, Public Administration and Healthcare-related backgrounds are needed. Internships through the Federal Diversity Internship Initiative are fully-funded and paid opportunities. In addition, some support is provided for travel and other expenses. There is no out-of-pocket cost for participation. To be considered for this opportunity, applications must be received by March 3, 2014. Recruiting for SHARP 2014 for Undergrads Interested in Research

SHARP (Summer HIV/AIDS Research Program) is a 12-week summer program for current undergraduate and community college students. The program is organized around a mentored research project, seminars and workshops led by researchers based at the San Francisco Department of Public Health, and networking opportunities with other students and young investigators.

SHARP seeks to recruit students from communities that are generally underrepresented in the field of research, including African Americans, Latinos and Latinas, Native Americans and Pacific Islanders, as well as students from disadvantaged backgrounds, those who have a disability, and those who identify as transgender, lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGBT). Ideal candidates are typically those who are considering conducting social or biomedical research that addresses health disparities as part of their career and also have an interest in HIV and populations at risk.

Health Career Connection places talented, diverse undergraduate students in summer internships, providing them with invaluable exposure, experience, and mentoring to pursue health careers.

Description:

The Health Career Connection Comprehensive Summer Internship Program includes:

• A paid, full-­­time 10-­­week internship placement in a partner organization.  Interns work under the direction of a preceptor and work on meaningful projects that are educational for the student and benefit the organization and its community. Interns also learn about the how the organization is structured and operates and about the roles of administrative and clinical professionals.
• Workshops on key professional and personal development topics including: leadership, advocacy, cultural competence, life and career planning and graduate education preparation.
• Site visits to a diverse set of key partner organizations to provide exposure to multiple settings and leaders.
• Peer support and network among interns within and across regions who share similar interests, passions and career decision dilemmas but come from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
• Mentoring from Health Career Connection’s team.
• Connections to top graduate schools in public health and medicine for assistance with preparation.
• Support from Health Career Connection’s network of alumni and professionals during and after the internship.

Internship stipends range between $3,000 and $4,000.

Housing and transportation are NOT provided by Health Career Connection.

If your application is selected, in person interviews are held in New York City, Boston, Chapel Hill, San Francisco/Oakland, Los Angeles, Fresno and Coachella Valley.

Qualifications:

All majors welcome! Demonstrated career interest in health care management, health policy, health education, community health and other public health options. Past work experience is not necessary-­­-­­ just a strong interest in health and public health and/or working with underserved communities in a health setting.

HCC does not provide medical or clinical internships. Students interested in becoming a provider must also have a strong interest in one of the areas described above and be willing to do an internship that is NOT clinically focused.

The focus of the Health Career Connection Program is juniors and seniors from undergraduate programs, as well as recent graduates (less than 3 years). Sophomores and freshman may be considered.

Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Technology Program

Here is a great opportunity for internships from the organization, Girls Who Code. Girls Who Code works to educate, inspire, and equip young women with the skills and resources to pursue academic and career opportunities in computing fields.  Girls Who Code’s vision is to reach gender parity in computing fields. GWC believes this is paramount to ensure the economic prosperity of women, families, and communities across the globe, and to equip citizens with the 21st century tools for innovation and social change. Summer 2013 Competitive Government Program: PAID Federal Internships

There is immediate availability for the Summer 2013 Competitive Government Program – and these positions must be filled as soon as possible! Specifically, positions are available with the United States’ Veterans Administration (VA), and students with Business/Human Resources, Computer & Information Technology, Engineering and Healthcare-related backgrounds are needed. If you complete your application soon, you will immediately be considered for these opportunities. 

Eligibility:

• United States citizenship required;
• Applicants must be enrolled in, or have recently graduated from, an undergraduate or graduate program. Additionally, candidates must have a GPA of 3.0 or above;
• Undergraduate students from affiliated universities must receive approval from their campus liaison in order to participate;
• Undergraduate students from non-affiliated universities must seek approval from their campus if they would like to receive academic credit;
• Candidates should be available for the full term of the internship, which will likely reflect TWC’s standard program dates. It is important to note that in some cases, Competitive Government internships will have different start/end dates than those outlined. Individuals who receive such an offer will have specific expectations outlined;
• Students should have demonstrated experience and/or strong interest in working for the federal government.

Competitive Government internships are fully-funded and paid opportunities. In addition, some support is provided for travel and other expenses. The internship begins on June 10th and ends August 17th.

Due to referral deadlines, applications must be submitted quickly – and no later than Thursday, April 4th. An official transcript will be required, but applicants who provide an unofficial copy and submit by April 5 will be considered (an official copy must be sent later).
