Grad School Fair at Fordham University

Grad School Fair at Fordham University on Tuesday, June 19th, from 5pm to 8pm!

The fair is free and open to the public, and if you are thinking of going to grad school in the next year or two, it would be great to see you there.

Hosted by the Fordham University Graduate and Professional Schools, this fair is for undergrads, professionals, and anyone thinking of applying to graduate school to further their social impact career.

You’ll meet representatives from 60 different schools offering graduate degrees in Education, International Affairs, Nonprofit Management, Public Policy, Public Health, and Social Work among many others.

There will also be a panel discussion on Admissions and Financial Aid from 6pm – 7pm.

Internship With FM News 101.9

Mass communications major? Interested in broadcast, reporting, and/or radio? Well, there’s a great opportunity awaiting you!

FM News 101.9 New York is always looking for smart, ambitious students for their internship program within the news department. These internships are full-time, unpaid, and are given in exchange for credit from the student’s college or university. FM News 101.9 requires a letter on school letterhead from a faculty member, indicating that the school acknowledges the student is taking part in the internship program and will receive college credit. Interns will be given training in the following skills:

Writing: Students will be trained in writing for broadcast, and depending on their proficiency, their news copy may be used on air.

Phone Interviews: Students will be trained to call news makers, digitally edit the interview, and write around the cuts they edit. These cuts may also be used on air.

Audio: Students will be trained to take feeds from reporters, listen critically for any errors, and place them appropriately within the Burli operating system used in the FM News 101.9 newsroom.

Students will also get the opportunity to go out with a reporter and observe them at work.

All interns must take a writing test before being accepted into the program.

Junior Peer Educator Positions w. the NYC Healthy Relationship Training Academy

Here are some quick questions:
  • Do you want to help your peers learn about dating violence and healthy relationships?
  • Are you interested in peer education?
  • Do you enjoy working with a team and have a go-getter attitude?
  • Are you a fast learner and able to communicate effectively?
  • Do you want to meet other young people throughout the five boroughs of NYC?
  • Are you between the ages of 17 and 22 and legally able to work in the U.S.?

If you answered YES to all of these questions, this might be a great position for you!

About the position and requirements:

  • Peer education about dating violence and healthy relationships
  • Educators travel to a variety of locations throughout the city to facilitate 90-minute sessions with groups of 10-40 young people ages 11-24
  • Applicants must be between the ages of 17 and 22 and able to work in the U.S.
  • Part-time (4-10 workshops/month, depending on availability)
  • Paid ($20/workshop and $10/hour for meetings)
  • 30 hours of training will take place July 30 – August 9 (mandatory!)
  • No experience necessary, but must be willing to learn!

Dr. Calvin Martin Memorial Scholarship for African-American Males

The Dr. Calvin Martin Memorial Scholarship Trust Fund Inc, a non-profit charitable organization, was named in memory of its founder Dr. Calvin Martin. His passion was a love for education.

The mission of the Scholarship Trust Fund is to educate African American Male Students through a scholar and mentorship program, to achieve higher academic excellence.   

The scholarships are available to students who demonstrate high academic achievements in high schools. They must be born in the USA and reside in the Tri-State area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

The amount of $100,000 will be awarded each year in scholarships. A maximum of $10,000 will be awarded each year per student who is attending a four-year college or university program.  Applicants must choose a major in the following field: education, business, law, medicine, architecture, engineering and creative arts.  Applicants must be at least 16 years of age, and are high school seniors. (Please note that these scholarships are available to African-American males only).

Volunteer at The Bowery Mission Women’s Center!

There are a few upcoming volunteer opportunities in May at the Bowery Mission Women’s Center through Hope for New York. Each month, the team leader works to organize three meals.

For those of you who haven’t volunteered before, during these events, the team:
-Meets at a store on the Upper East Side to shop for groceries
-Takes said groceries back to the center (a few blocks away) where they cook a meal for 20 women
-Serves the women and fellowships with them

The total time commitment is:
2:30pm to 6:30pm for the Sunday meals
3:30pm to 7:30pm for the Saturday meals

There is no monetary cost associated with volunteering. Please see the dates below and let Sue, Christina, or Aurora know if you are available to help out. They will send an email closer to the date with more details once they have a list of confirmed volunteers.
