New York Academy of Medicine: Margaret E. Mahoney 2014 Fellowships

The Margaret E. Mahoney Fellowship program provides stipends for outstanding medical, dental, public health, public policy and graduate nursing students to conduct summer research projects on some aspect of health care delivery transformation for vulnerable populations and/or early childhood health and development, with an emphasis on policy implications.   Fellows are also required to participate in a variety of leadership development activities.   The New York Academy of Medicine administers the program, which also includes seminars on the policy-making process and leadership development, as well as conversations with esteemed health leaders.

In 2014, NYAM expects to award six Fellowships. Fellows will receive a stipend of $4,500, payable in two installments: 2/3 at the beginning of the program and 1/3 upon review of their final reports.  No support for indirect costs or laboratory expenses is provided.  Up to $500 may be available to Fellows to reimburse certain program-related expenses for which receipts are submitted.

Summer Medical and Dental Education Program- APPLY TODAY

Well, good news!  Applications to the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program are now being accepted.

Program features:

• Academic enrichment in the basic sciences and quantitative topics
• Learning-Skills Development-including study skills and methods of individual and group learning
• Clinical exposure through small-group clinical rotations and full-group clinician seminars. This is limited to 5% of program time for all the sites
• Career development, including the exploration of the medical and dental careers, other health professions and an individualized education plan to identify other appropriate enrichment activities
• Financial planning workshop and health policy seminars

Students will receive FREE room and board AND a stipend.

The program is located in 12 sites, nationally.

The Gilman Scholarship Study Abroad Program – Deadline: March 4th

The Gilman Scholarship Program offers awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. 

The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are planning to study and intern abroad. The program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study and intern abroad and the countries and regions where they go by supporting undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints.

The Gilman Scholarship Program and JAY Z’s Shawn Carter Foundation recently announced a partnership to support study abroad scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with financial need.

Public Health Associate PAID Fellowship Program’s Deadline is TOMORROW

The CDC Public Health Associate Program (PHAP) vacancy announcement is OPEN.

The application period is February 3–7, 2014.

PHAP is a competitive, two-year, paid CDC fellowship for recent graduates with a bachelor’s or master’s degree who are beginning a career in public health and are seeking hands-on experience.  Each PHAP associate is assigned to a state, tribal, local, or territorial public health agency and works alongside local public health professionals.  After completing the program, PHAP graduates will be qualified for jobs with federal, state, tribal, local, and territorial public health agencies and will be uniquely prepared to pursue an advanced degree in public health.

Apply for the BRAG 2013 Scholarship Program

More than two decades ago the BRAG Scholarship Fund was founded as a means of providing needed financial assistance to students of color. The BRAG Board of Directors is proud to say they have stayed the course. They understand leadership and good citizenship comes with education. To that end, BRAG is firmly committed to their continued support of students who may have an interest in pursuing a career in retail and related industries.

The BRAG Scholarship is based on scholastic achievement, leadership, community service and need. The awards are to be used for tuition, books and/or supplies and will be disbursed in January of the school calendar year for college students and the following fall semester for High School students.  The money must be used within a one-school-year period. All monies not used within the designated period will revert back to the BRAG Scholarship Fund.  All scholarship funds are allocated directly to the University, not to the student.

Application:
An essay of 500 words on: “Brick and Mortar vs. Online Retailers”…friends or foe? How have online retailers changed the business in the last decade? must be submitted with your application.

Here is a list of the additional BRAG scholarship criteria:
•High School Students must have minimum Grade Point Average of 85
•College Students must be full-time undergraduates (12 hours or more)
•College students are required to have a cumulative GPA of 3.0
•All applicants must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident
• Must provide 2 Letters of Recommendation: (School, employment, and/or personal)
•Must provide an official copy of transcript

Students must submit their application completely filled out with all the information requested. If the requested information is incomplete; the application will not be considered.

The deadline for receipt of your Application/Essay is June 30th, 2013 for scholarships awarded in October.

Scholarships will be awarded at BRAG’s Annual Scholarship and Awards Dinner Gala in New York. The Awards Gala will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2013. It is mandatory for selected students to attend the BRAG Annual Scholarship and Awards Dinner Gala to receive their Scholarship Award.

S.O.U.L. Sisters Leadership Project Summer Institute

S.O.U.L. Sisters Leadership Project

The S.O.U.L. Sisters Leadership Project is a leadership development program for court-involved young women. It is an intensive 2-week program that seeks to challenge and motivate young women to recognize their leadership abilities in their communities, school, and families. Young women will be mentored on how to strengthen their voice and speak up for what is right. The program includes a retreat, workshops, field trips, guest speakers, mentors and a stipend.

The Sisters Organizing for Unity and Leadership Project is accepting applications for their new summer institute for young women, ages 14-18 years old!

5 Things A Prospective Candidate Should Know About Spending Their Summer with S.O.U.L. Sisters:

1.  Starts August 2, 2013 and ends August 16, 2013. There will be a mandatory orientation at the end of July for all accepted participants! The program is Monday-Friday 10am-4:30pm (Friday field trips are shorter days)! Attendance Policy: no more than 1 absence.

2.  Each participant will be on a college campus and receive a stipend, lunch and metro card for the full two weeks of program.

3.  Each participant will take 4 workshops during the summer program including a leader seminar, identity workshop, and creative workshop.

4.  Each participant will have a mentor called a counselor! She will be the young woman’s mentor throughout the two-week institute and will provide her with support and encouragement!

5.  Special Activities: Overnight Retreat, Leader Wednesdays (hearing women leaders tell their stories), Fun Fridays (Women in Action trips) & Workshops (healthy relationships, feminism, street harassment, college support)!

Please Note: All participants must be court-involved, meaning they have been arrested at least once.
