HBCU Connect School Pride Scholarship

The School Pride Scholarship is available to high school seniors and full-time undergraduate students. To be considered, you must submit an essay explaining what your school has to offer that you can’t find anywhere else. You must have a minimum 2.5 GPA to be eligible for this award.  Essays must be posted on a blog.

NMIC’s Young Adult Internship Program

Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation’s Young Adult Internship Program is funded by the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development. Their goal is to match disconnected youth ages 17-24 with 12 week paid internships in the field of their interest and job readiness training.   To be eligible applicant must be:

Ages 17-24

Not enrolled in school, not attending a GED or employment assistance program

Must be unemployed

May not have received Associates or Bachelor’s degrees

Applicants do not need H.S diploma or GED to be eligible

NMIC’s particular YAIP program also serves youth who are one of the following:

Generally disconnected

In the foster care system or have been in the past

Court Involved

Runaway/Homeless

NMIC YAIP accepts applicants from all parts of Manhattan and the Bronx, but we give priority to applicants who live in the Washington Heights/Inwood, West Harlem, Manhattanville, Morningside Heights, & Hamilton Heights. Each YAIP program in each borough gives priority to those who live in their community districts.

Go to the NMIC Washington Heights office at 76 Wadsworth Avenue (2nd floor) to apply in person.

Monday, Tuesday, and Friday 9AM-5PM

Applicants are welcomed to call and schedule an appointment.

– Bring proof of identity (photo ID card), proof of address (bank statement, utility bill from household, state ID issued in the last 6 months, or letter from a shelter or transitional housing program, an original birth certificate, and an original social security card.

– Take a TABE basic reading and math test

– Complete an interview

**applicants may complete these steps over a number of visits**

If an applicant is accepted, they will enroll in the program and begin with a two week paid orientation at the NMIC office including classes on job readiness, financial literacy, soft skills, healthy living, computer literacy, conflict resolution, and leadership development. After orientation, youth will complete a 12 week paid internship and will be paid at a rate of $7.25 an hour for 25 hours a week, and will receive weekly educational classes to further their career and academic skills.  All youth will receive one-on-one support from a NMIC academic counselor, job developer, and program manager.  NMIC’s nine month post-internship follow up and retention phase will include career and academic counseling and facilitate enrollment in educational programs and job placement.

Join New York Cares at the NYC Citizen Corps Disaster Volunteer Conference

New York Cares invites you to join them on Tuesday, May 1 from 5:15 – 8pm at the 6th annual Disaster Volunteer Conference hosted by NYC Citizen Corps Council at Pace University’s Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts in lower Manhattan.

The conference will feature exhibits, dinner provided by The Salvation Army Greater New York Division, and speakers focusing on how volunteers can create change.

Distinguished speakers will include a welcome address by Joseph F. Bruno (Commissioner – NYC Office of Emergency Management), a keynote address by Jeff Parness (Founder and Executive Director – New York Says Thank You Foundation), followed by a panel discussion moderated by Herman Schaffer, MSW (Director, Community Outreach – NYC Office of Emergency Management) with a growing list of panelists, including Gary Bagley (Executive Director – New York Cares) and Sara Farmer (Data Humanitarian – Standy-by Task force, Crisismappers Network, and Ushahidi Community).
