This fall, the U.S. Census Bureau will hire over 500 temporary Field Representatives to conduct the New York City Housing & Vacancy Survey (NYC-HVS). This survey is conducted every three years to comply with the City’s rent regulation laws. The Census Bureau has conducted the survey for the City since 1965.

Applicants who wish to take the Census test for the NYC-HVS must reside within Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Manhattan or the Bronx. The pay rate for Field Representatives in these areas is $16.92 per hour. Employment will last about four to six months. Training is paid and employees are reimbursed for travel expenses. All interested applicants must be over the age of 18, pass a background check, be a U.S. Citizen, and pass a written test and two interviews.

All applicants outside of Manhattan are required to have a valid driver’s license and regular access to an insured vehicle. Fifth Avenue Committee is Searching for a Tenant Organizer and Advocate

Position: Full-time, 35 hrs/week 

Fifth Avenue Committee (FAC), is a nationally recognized South Brooklyn based, non-profit community development corporation formed in 1978 whose mission is to advance economic and social justice by building vibrant, diverse communities where residents has genuine opportunities to achieve their goals as well as the power to shape the community’s future. FAC works to transform the lives of over 5,500 low and moderate income New Yorkers annually so that we can all live and work with dignity and respect while making our community more equitable, sustainable, inclusive and just.

To achieve our mission FAC develops and manages affordable housing and community facilities, creates economic opportunities and ensures access to economic stability, organizes residents and workers, offers student centered adult education, and combats displacement caused by gentrification. In addition to our grassroots neighborhood work, we are actively involved in broader coalitions and campaigns.

The position will be primarily performing work on FAC’s behalf to our affiliate, Neighbors Helping Neighbors (NHN) in offices in Sunset Park.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

o Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish and/or Chinese required;

o Prior knowledge of NYC tenant rights, tenant organizing, eviction prevention, and/or public benefits required;

o Some exposure to NYC affordable rental housing issues and trends preferred;

o Experience working in a community-based, not for profit setting preferred;

o Comfortable working with low-income, immigrant residents, many undocumented;

o Ability to learn quickly and utilize creative problem solving skills;

o Detail-oriented, able to establish priorities in collaboration with program staff, and meet reporting deadlines;

o Able to work independently in an intimate, fast-paced work environment;

o Excellent communication skills in speaking and writing;

o Computer literacy;

o Demonstrated commitment to equity, dignity and social justice;

Job Opening: Bi-lingual (English/ Spanish) Medicaid Fieldworker

Miller and Milone, P.C.  is searching for a Bi-lingual (English/ Spanish) Medicaid Fieldworker:        

Summary:

The Medicaid Field Worker is part of a team at Miller & Milone that works together to determine Medicaid eligibility for patients of client hospitals and complete the Medicaid applications. He/she exercises all means of communication (telephone, e-mail, and in-person meetings) to collect documentation for the purpose of evaluating patients’ eligibility and/or completing application requirements. Travel to hospitals and patient residences in an attempt to collect documentation is required.  Field workers must conduct themselves at all times in accordance with HIPAA and Medicaid guidelines.

Responsibilities include:

• Screening Spanish speaking patients for Medicaid eligibility
• Researching and verifying patients’ residences using search engines
• Traveling to hospitals to retrieve patient documentation
• Visiting Spanish speaking patients’ homes to screen for financial eligibility and complete Medicaid application process
• Traveling to Department of Social Services to process applicant paperwork
• Researching and resolving Medicaid-related issues
• Documenting all actions taken to communicate with patients, updating patient accounts, tracking application status, and processing weekly reporting
• Managing of 60-70 patient accounts per cycle

Position Requirements:
• Must be fluent in Spanish and English to effectively communicate with patients/applicants
• Strong organizational and time-management skills
• Must possess a  strong work ethic and be able to work independently
• Adherence to Medicaid and HIPAA guidelines
• Excellent communication skills English/Spanish
• Must have a clean driving record and a reliable, fully-insured vehicle (mileage will be reimbursed)
• Proficient in Microsoft (Excel, Word, and Outlook) applications
• Must be able to travel locally and be in the field 50% of the time
• Present a professional image in appearance and attitude
• Must pass safe and valid motor vehicle screening, criminal background check, OIG & GSA excluded party search, and 10 panel drug screening
• Must pass the New York State Notary exam within 3 months of hire. Eligibility for obtaining the Notary License requires that you be a U.S. Citizen or have a Resident Alien Green Card

Flexible Schedule:

The position is full-time (40 hours/week) with flexible scheduling. Candidates will be required to work Saturdays and evenings, with compensatory time off during the week.

2 – Weekday evenings spent in the field
3 – Saturdays a month, full days, spent in field
1 – Saturday a month spent working from home
2 – Days a week, 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., spent in office

From Failure to Promise Scholarship Essay Contest

In 2010, Dr. C. Moorer published his ground breaking work, “From Failure to Promise: An Uncommon Path to Professoriate”. The author has told his story to inspire and motivate youth to reach great promise and their fullest potential.  Dr. C. Moorer invites high school seniors, undergraduate, and graduate-level students with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA to write an original essay.  The winning essay will receive a cash prize of $1500 and will be published on the “From Failure to Promise” website.

Spokeo Connections Scholarship

The Spokeo Connections Scholarship is available to graduating high school seniors and full – time undergraduate students. To be eligible, you must submit a 1000 – to 1600 – word essay on one of the three given topics:

1. Connections
2. Relationships
3. Access to data

• Applicant must be either a recently graduated high school senior who will enroll as a freshman at a four-year or two-year college or university in the spring of 2014 OR a student currently enrolled on a full-time basis at an accredited four-year or two-year college or university.
• Applicant must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
• Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States.
• Essay must be no fewer than 1,000 words and no greater than 1,600 words.
• Essay must be applicant’s original work.
• Essay must be submitted no later than 11:59 p.m. November 20th, 2013.

Judging

• The winning essay will be judged on the following criteria: content, style, creativity, and how persuasively the applicant presents his or her point of view. After the deadline of November 20th, 2013 all entries will be reviewed. After review the winning essay will be selected by a panel of three judges.

Prize

• The applicant of the winning essay will receive a one-time scholarship of $1,000 to be applied to the following school-related expenses: tuition, fees, books, and on-campus room and board. Funds must be used in the 2013 -2014 academic year. Scholarship funds are provided by Spokeo and will be paid via mail to the accredited college or university of the winning applicant’s choosing.

• All entries must be entered through the official Spokeo Connections Scholarship submission form, which can be found here . No paper or hard copy submissions will be accepted. All essays must be written in English. Submissions must be uploaded in either a Microsoft Word or PDF format.  Materials required include original essay AND current transcript.
