University of Maryland’s Summer Research Initiative

The Summer Research Initiative (SRI) was created in 1999 by the Office of the Dean in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSOS).  The program is designed to encourage and enhance the diversity of scholars working in the social and behavioral science fields.

SRI is interested in receiving applications from a broad spectrum of students, including African Americans, Latino/Hispanics, American Indian/Alaskan Natives, Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders, as well as students with research interests related to diverse communities

The goals of the initiative are to:

• Increase the knowledge of, and interest in, doctoral-level training in the social, behavioral, and economic sciences;
• Provide rising juniors and seniors an opportunity to learn about graduate studies and the range of research and scholarship in the social, behavioral, and economic sciences at the University of Maryland;
• Provide a laboratory experience that enhances basic research knowledge and skills;
• Provide lectures, workshops, didactic exchanges, etc., to enhance students’ knowledge of the graduate application process, negotiating the academic rigors and professional and personal challenges encountered in graduate school, and developing career paths in social, behavioral, and economic science; and
• Provide mentoring and networking opportunities for students to advance their training in the social, behavior, and economic sciences.

The SRI is part of the college’s longstanding commitment to increasing the number of underrepresented minorities who pursue graduate degrees in the social, behavioral, and economic sciences. According to data from the National Science Foundation, the university ranks 8th in the country in the number of doctoral degrees awarded and 13th in the number of Bachelor of Arts degrees awarded to underrepresented minority students in those fields.

The application cycle runs from December 1, 2012 – February 15, 2013.  Applications will be reviewed February – March, 2013 and selection announcements will be made in April, 2013.  The actual program runs 8 weeks, from June 3, 2013 – July 26, 2013.  Those selected will be expected to arrive to campus for the weekend program orientation on Saturday, June 1, 2013.

SUNY ATTAIN Lab is Offering FREE Computer Training & Microsoft Certification

The SUNY ATTAIN lab at Elmcor is now recruiting for their upcoming BASIC computer class and advanced Microsoft Certification classes for 2013.

SUNY ATTAIN targets the TANF population and the unemployed but won’t turn anyone away.  All participants must visit the lab to enroll.

In order to get into the MOS certification classes, participants must have basic computer skills AND be familiar with WORD (any version).  They will be asked to complete an assessment in order to enroll into the MOS classes.

If they cannot complete the assessment, they will be encouraged to enroll into the BASIC computer class.

FREE Classes Include:

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is Offering PAID Internships

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is now accepting applications for its paid internship program.

The Museum offers forty-one paid positions for college juniors, recent college graduates and master’s-degree students each year.

Interns commence in June and are placed in host departments where they work closely with supervisors on special and ongoing projects.

All paid interns also participate in MuSe (Museum Seminars) and receive training to teach in the Museum’s galleries.

VOCAL-NY is a grassroots membership organization dedicated to creating healthy and just communities by building power among low-income people affected by HIV/AIDS, the drug war and mass incarceration.  During the past couple of years alone, VOCAL-NY’s advocacy has won significant policy change around affordable housing, progressive revenue, prison-based gerrymandering, overdose prevention and HIV/AIDS prevention.

VOCAL-NY is seeking to hire eligible individuals for the following positions: 

POLICY DIRECTOR

The Policy Director will lead public policy analysis, research and communications activities for grassroots campaigns around HIV/AIDS and drug policy. Policy issues may include HIV/AIDS housing, overdose prevention, syringe access, hepatitis C, harm reduction, methadone, police reform and broader social justice issues like progressive taxation.

The position requires experience in public policy analysis, legislative advocacy, communications and coalition building. The Policy Director will work collaboratively with a team of seven community organizers and grassroots members to analyze data, develop policy change and legislative strategies, lobby government officials, coordinate with allies and deepen public awareness about our policy goals. The Policy Director reports to the Lead Organizer.

HIV/AIDS COMMUNITY ORGANIZER

The HIV/AIDS Community Organizer will be responsible for coordinating VOCAL-NY’s base building, leadership development and advocacy campaigns around HIV/AIDS. A central focus for the position will be promoting the active involvement of people living with HIV/AIDS in policymaking that affects their lives. The position will include coordinating VOCAL-NY’s HIV/AIDS Housing Network of non-profit organizations providing housing services to people living with HIV/AIDS. VOCAL-NY has five full-time and two part-time community organizers, including a Lead Organizer who will supervise this position.

Shadow Count 2013: PAID Opportunity

SHADOW COUNT 2013

The Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College will be conducting the  2013 Shadow Count (Monday, January 28^th to Tuesday, January 29th).

Shadow Count is an independent evaluation that helps to ensure the accuracy of the DHS Street Survey –The HOPE Count. The purpose of the Street Survey is to determine the numbers of people left outside the shelter system and in need of additional outreach/programmatic services. Volunteers will be paid $75, must be over 18 years old, and need to attend a training session prior to the count. 

 

The official Count begins at midnight Monday, Jan 28, 2013.  It  continues through the night until Tuesday morning at 4:00 am on January 29, 2013.   However, volunteers are required to check-in at their assigned staging site by 10:00 PM Monday night in order to check in and arrive at deployment locations on time.

Jackie Robinson Foundation 2012-2013 Scholarship

The Jackie Robinson Foundation announces the launch of the 2012-2013 Scholarship Application Process for graduating minority high school seniors. The Foundation selects highly motivated students with financial need to receive $24,000 over four years to attend a four-year accredited college or university.

The program is accompanied by a host of services, including all-expense paid annual leadership conferences, internship placement and many networking opportunities.  Selected “JRF Scholars” receive a comprehensive set of tools to ensure their success through college and beyond.

The application deadline is February 15, 2013.  Currently, there are 169 JRF Scholars attending 100 different colleges and universities in 35 states and the District of Columbia during this 2012-2013 academic year.  Close to 1400 JRF Scholars have been selected since the first awards were made in 1973. Paid Media Internships for Students of Color

The Emma Bowen Foundation is actively seeking black male applicants for its paid internship work/study program with national media companies. Any minority student (African American, Hispanic, Asian or Native American) who is a rising high school senior, graduating high school senior or college freshman, has a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0, is interested in pursuing a career in the media industry, and plans to attend a four-year accredited college or university is eligible to apply to the Emma L. Bowen Foundation work/study program.

Eligible applicants must be:

– U.S. citizens or legal residents of the United States

– Speak and write English fluently to be considered. 

Your grade transcript, at least two (2) educational references from teachers and/or advisors, and a 500-to-1,000-word essay must accompany the application form.

The Emma L. Bowen Foundation was created in 1989 to prepare minority youth for careers in the media industry. The Foundation’s program is unlike traditional intern programs in that students work for partner companies during summers and school breaks from the summer following their senior year in high school until they graduate from college. During the four-year program, students have an opportunity to learn many aspects of corporate operations and develop company-specific skills. Corporations have an opportunity to train and mentor students with the option of full-time employment upon completion of their college degrees.

Students earn an hourly salary and matching funds for college expenses. Academic excellence is also a key component of the program-students are required to maintain a 3.0 grade point average to remain in good standing. The Foundation staff works closely with corporate partners to monitor each student’s academic and work progress. An annual summer conference, a community service program and a mentoring program are also provided to further enhance the student’s knowledge and experience. Resource guides for both students and corporate supervisors are provided to maximize the student’s experience while in the program.

This unique, multi-year program prepares a diverse group of talented young professionals to enter the workforce with specific job-related skills, knowledge of the corporate environment and a strong foundation for future advancement. Students work in a variety of functional areas (e.g., marketing, sales, finance, public relations, human resources, technology, news, web design, promotion, etc.) and rotate each summer. Currently, we have 260 active students nationwide and more than 500 graduates. Approximately 70-80 new students join the program each year.

Project HOPE is Hiring

Project Hope is a program that provides free crisis counseling to individuals and families affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services (JBFCS) needs people ready and willing to work in Staten Island and Coney Island.  JBFCS’s goal is to help 7,500 people affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Your job will be to help others affected by Hurricane Sandy by reaching out in affected communities.

You will use standardized screenings and make referrals when additional supports are needed.  Training will be provided.

Jobs currently open include:
* Crisis Counselors: Para-professionals to conduct brief interventions in teams of two – in the field. Multiple languages needed. If you already live in Staten Island or Coney Island, that is a plus. No prior experience needed.
* Team Leaders: Help the crisis counselors do their job.

2013 College Book Scholarship for Graduating High School Seniors

Scholarship Description:
Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. (“Lambda Pi Chi”) was established on April 16, 1988 at Cornell University as the first U.S. Latina-focused sorority founded at an Ivy-league institution.  Lambda Pi Chi works to empower women by providing a supportive network dedicated to their personal and professional advancement.  Their members promote public service and cultural awareness with an emphasis on the Latino/a experience, and are committed to personal, professional, and academic achievement.  To that end, Lambda Pi Chi has established an annual College Book Scholarship for high school seniors who are highly motivated, and committed to community service and academic excellence. The College Book Scholarship is part of Lambda Pi Chi’s Proyecto H.A.C.E.R. (Hermanas Advancing Career and Educational Resources) and will be open to female high school seniors attending high schools in the host city of Lambda Pi Chi’s Annual National Convention.

Lambda Pi Chi will select two high school students who will receive a one-time award of $500 for first place or $250 for second place to assist them in covering the costs of textbooks and/or school supplies for the first year of college.  Lambda Pi Chi’s Scholarship Committee will consider academic achievement, leadership potential, and community involvement during the selection process.
